After neurological training in Auckland, Dr Hutchinson spent 3 years in the Muscle Laboratory at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minnesota. On returning to New Zealand he initially took up a consultant post in Hamilton, then moved to become a full-time hospital neurologist in the Department of Neurology at Auckland City Hospital. Dr Hutchinson's subspecialty interest is disorders of muscle. He has received a research grant from the New Zealand Neurological Foundation, and has served on this body's SAC. He has been secretary of the Neurological Association of New Zealand, and is currently on the SAC for Neurology, a committee of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians which oversees training of neurologists in New Zealand.
